LASTING LEGACY

In 1923 the clover was debuted by Ugo Sivocci—one of the four principal race car drivers for Alfa Romeo. Sivocci hand-painted a green four-leaf clover—or in Italian, a Quadrifoglio—on his Alfa Romeo RL race car for a bit of luck in the Targa Florio race.

The Quadrifoglio boldly adorned the race car as a distinguishing feature among a slew of other race cars. Sivocci won the Targa Florio race. He believed it was the Quadrifoglio badge that was the key to his winning success, and so he continued to paint the badge on all his future race cars.

During a practice run for the Italian Grand Prix, Sivocci hadn't yet painted the Quadrifoglio on his P1 race car—ironically, he crashed. Sivocci’s untimely death marked a symbolic change to the Quadrifoglio badge. The clover initially sat inside a white diamond, each point representing one of the four Alfa Romeo principle drivers. In honor of Ugo Sivocci, one of the diamond’s points was removed, turning the symbol into the now familiar triangle shape. The Quadrifoglio badge became, and still is today, a symbol of passion for motor racing and a tribute to our prized race car driver.

With our trademark badge, five world titles and record-breaking achievements in Formula 1 over the years, the Quadrifoglio and performance racing have become one in the same.

Our design story is inextricably linked to our racing heritage. Quadrifoglio vehicles have their architecture, engines and mechanical components developed in our headquarters in Italy.

Designers and craftsmen worked endlessly to achieve the best solutions in style and driving dynamism—which resulted in our Twin-Turbocharged V6 engine with Best-in-Class horsepower, an Unsurpassed-in-Class 0-60 mph time, the Class-Exclusive DNA Drive Mode Selector with Race Mode feature and the Giulia is the only sedan in the world to have an active aero front splitter.

It is at the Nürburgring track and the Circuito di Balocco proving grounds in Italy that we test every aspect of our engineering. Our iconic hand-painted emblem will only grace a Quadrifoglio vehicle design after it has passed this rigorous testing.

An unyielding quest for weight reduction also plays an integral role in sculpting the Quadrifoglio exterior and interior design—the use of light materials like carbon fiber makes for an ultralight composition with aerodynamic efficiencies and helps our Quadrifoglio lineup achieve top speeds in a matter of seconds.

Today, Alfa Romeo forges the path ahead as a leader in quality, innovation and dedication to speed. Years of perfecting the ultimate race car began with our Alfa Romeo RL, P2, 6C, 8C, Tipo B “P3”, 158 “Alfetta”, TZ, 33, GTA and 155 DTM. Over a century later our efforts have led us to the Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio—Alfa Romeo high-performance models designed for drivers with the heart of a racer.
