TECHNOLOGY
Yes, the Tonale is the first electrified vehicle from Alfa Romeo. Equipped with Q4 All-Wheel Drive, a six-speed automatic transmission, a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery, and a 1.3L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Alfa Romeo Tonale Hybrid delivers 347 pound-feet of torque and Best-in-Class 285 horsepower39.

“Hybrid Electric” is defined as a vehicle that utilizes both gas and electric powertrains for propulsion, and can typically drive for short periods of time on electric power only. Like an Electric Vehicle, this vehicle’s battery can be recharged from a wall charger, but the vehicle can also run on gasoline.
The vehicle combines a traditional combustion engine with the power of an electric motor. Using regenerative braking, the Alfa Romeo Tonale can also help recharge its battery while you drive by capturing electrical energy from deceleration.
Hybrid Electric vehicles offer many of the advantages of electric vehicles, such as lower running costs, a quiet drive and zero emissions when it comes to pure electric driving. Hybrid Electric vehicles ensure the flexibility of a conventional gasoline-powered engine for longer trips without necessarily recharging the battery from an external source. The combination of the gasoline-powered engine and the electric motor can allow the vehicle to have a higher level of torque and performance than conventional vehicles.
CHARGING
Charging your Alfa Romeo Tonale is easy—just plug the charger cord into the vehicle’s power outlet located on the driver’s side rear fender, and then hook the other end up to an electrical source. Tonale comes with a Level 1 charging cord, which requires a conventional 120-volt AC grounded wall outlet. Before you begin charging, it is important to ensure your vehicle is turned off and in Park. Insert the AC plug of the charging cord into the grounded wall outlet. Then take the charge connector and insert it into the vehicle’s charging port until you hear a click. When properly inserted, the charge active indicator light will activate. Once your vehicle is fully charged, all bars on the indicator will be illuminated.
The Level 1 or the available Level 2 240-volt charger40 is compatible with Alfa Romeo Tonale. A Level 3 (DC fast-charging) cord and/or charger, which can be found at some charging stations, is not compatible.

With a Level 1 120-volt charger, the battery fully recharges in approximately 8 hours. You can shorten that time to as little as 2.5 hours by using an available Level 2 240-volt charger42. The Alfa Romeo Tonale has an onboard 7.4-kW charger. However, these estimated charging times are based on the Tonale having a completely discharged high-voltage battery. Charging times will vary based on many factors, including the battery’s age, its condition, the state of charge and the available current being provided to the charger from its energy source. The internal temperature of the high-voltage battery may also affect your vehicle’s charging time.

Yes, the Alfa Romeo Tonale can be charged at a public charging station. These stations typically have Level 2 240-volt chargers, so it would take around 2.5 hours to fully charge an Alfa Romeo Tonale with a completely discharged battery. Level 3 (DC fast-charging) cords and/or chargers, which can be found at some charging stations, are not compatible.
We’ve made finding the nearest charging stations easy. The Alfa Romeo Tonale includes dynamic range mapping in its Uconnect® 5 navigation system, which allows you to plan your trip in relation to available charging stations on the way. Additionally, you can open the available ALFA Connect App43 on your smartphone, which allows you to search for a charging station and send the location to your vehicle’s standard Uconnect® 5 navigation system.

You can set a charging schedule for the Alfa Romeo Tonale through the Uconnect® 5 Navigation System in the Hybrid Electric pages. To access these pages, select the App button on the main menu bar and then select the Hybrid Electric app. Then select “Schedules” to set up a charging schedule. Choose which schedule you’d like to set up. Then touch “Charge Schedule”. From there, you can also choose “Charge Until Full”, allowing the vehicle to fully charge instead of stopping at a certain time. The charging schedule can also be set using the available ALFA Connect App44 on your smartphone.

The batteries are designed to function properly in a variety of climates. That said, the battery charge can be reduced depending on how long the vehicle is exposed to extreme warmth for a long time, as energy will be used to cool the batteries. Similarly, in the case of extreme cold, the charge will be reduced because energy will be used to heat the batteries.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale will charge the battery through:
- Regenerative Braking, which takes the kinetic energy created when you use your brakes, turns it into electric energy, and recharges your battery with it. Under the right conditions, regenerative braking can also give you additional driving range by collecting regenerated electricity.
- E-Save Driving Mode, in which the system uses only your gas engine to keep the battery at a specific charge level.

One way to maximize the range of your Alfa Romeo Tonale during the colder seasons is to keep your vehicle fully charged when possible. In order to maximize the battery charge, consider gradual accelerations when possible, which will help maximize the efficiency of your electric charge. Additionally, you can select Dynamic Mode on the vehicle’s DNA Drive Mode Selector, which engages maximum brake regeneration. Brake regeneration takes kinetic energy from the brakes and converts it into electric energy, which is then used to charge the high-voltage battery.
